Experience that guides every recommendation
A home can look safe on paper and still make everyday routines harder. An experienced occupational therapist brings a clinical perspective to every recommendation.
An experienced occupational therapist assesses the home and recommends environmental modifications based on each person’s individual abilities and needs. Those professional recommendations give the project a clear, personalized plan before construction begins.
For adult children and families
You do not need to wait for a fall or a crisis. A calm conversation now can help your parent share what is getting harder, what they want to keep doing for themselves, and what would help them feel more confident at home.
Finding help with the cost
There is no single answer. The doorway to possible assistance may be a health plan, a Pennsylvania support program, a veterans’ benefit, or a local caregiver resource. Check the rules before choosing materials or scheduling construction.
Original Medicare does not ordinarily pay to alter the structure of a home. It may cover certain durable medical equipment or therapy under its usual benefit rules. Medicare Advantage plans vary, so ask your plan whether it offers an in-home safety benefit, whether installation is part of that benefit, and what must be approved first.
See Medicare’s durable-equipment guidanceFor people who qualify, Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program can include home adaptations within its long-term services and supports. A participant’s service coordinator can explain whether a proposed change fits the individual plan and what authorization is needed before any contract is signed.
Learn about Community HealthChoicesEligible veterans may be able to use the VA’s HISA benefit for medically necessary improvements, including certain entrance, bathroom, sink, or ramp changes. Separate VA housing-adaptation grants also exist. Because the documentation and approval path matters, contact the VA before the project starts.
